Turning Numbers Into Business Decisions

Sergio P. Mendes built his career by asking a simple question: What do the numbers really mean?

Today, Mendes is Vice President of Commercial Finance and Revenue Management at Palm Bay in New York, where he works with leadership teams to analyze performance, improve planning, and support strategic decisions across national partnerships.

His role sits at the crossroads of finance, operations, and sales strategy. Each day involves reviewing data, modeling business scenarios, and helping teams understand where opportunities exist.

But Mendes didn’t start his career in finance. His journey began in computer science.

“I’ve always liked solving problems,” Mendes says. “Data tells a story if you know how to read it.”

That mindset has guided his career for nearly two decades.

Early Life and Education: A Background in Technology

Before entering the business world, Mendes focused on technology.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Sacred Heart University in 1999. The program gave him strong training in logic, systems thinking, and analytical problem solving.

Later, he completed an MBA at Southern Connecticut State University in 2006. That experience helped him expand from technical analysis into broader business strategy.

“My computer science background still shapes how I work today,” Mendes says. “When I look at a business problem, I think about the systems behind it.”

This mix of technology and business knowledge would later help him analyze complex markets and operational data.

Outside of school, Mendes also spent time pursuing another passion: music.

“I’ve played guitar for years,” he says. “Music and business seem very different, but both require discipline and creativity.”

Early Career: Learning to Translate Data Into Insights

Mendes began his career working in sales performance and business analysis roles. These positions required reviewing large amounts of market data and turning it into insights that leaders could use.

He helped develop reporting tools that tracked performance, identified opportunities, and supported planning decisions.

At the time, companies were becoming more data-driven.

“Mergers, partnerships, distribution networks, pricing structures—everything produces data,” Mendes explains. “The challenge is understanding which numbers matter.”

His job was often to analyze trends and explain what they meant to executives and sales leaders.

“Data by itself isn’t useful,” Mendes says. “You have to connect it to real decisions.”

Moving Into Pricing and Revenue Strategy

As Mendes gained experience, he moved into leadership roles focused on pricing strategy and revenue management.

In these roles, he helped organizations design pricing frameworks, evaluate market conditions, and analyze how changes affected business performance.

Pricing strategy can be complex, he says, because it touches every part of a company.

“You have marketing teams, sales teams, operations, finance,” Mendes explains. “All of them influence the final outcome.”

One of his responsibilities was helping leadership teams understand how pricing decisions could affect long-term performance.

“Good strategy requires balance,” Mendes says. “You’re always thinking about growth, partnerships, and sustainability.”

Leading Commercial Operations at a National Scale

In 2020, Mendes stepped into a leadership role overseeing commercial operations and revenue strategy for a large regional business unit in New York.

The operation represented more than $100 million in annual activity, making it one of the larger responsibilities of his career.

His work included forecasting, pricing analysis, operational planning, and executive reporting.

He collaborated closely with leadership teams to track performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

“It was a very collaborative environment,” Mendes says. “You’re constantly working with different teams to understand what’s happening in the market.”

Managing that scale of business also reinforced the importance of communication.

“Strategy only works when everyone understands the plan,” Mendes says.

Leading Finance and Planning at Palm Bay

Today, Sergio P. Mendes leads commercial finance and revenue management strategy at Palm Bay in New York.

In this role, he manages a team of eight and helps guide financial planning and performance analysis across national partnerships.

His responsibilities include financial modeling, planning meetings, and tracking operational performance metrics.

He also works closely with sales and marketing teams to evaluate how different initiatives perform over time.

“Finance today is more involved than just reporting numbers,” Mendes says. “We’re helping teams understand where to focus.”

The goal, he says, is to provide information that helps leadership make informed decisions.

“Clear data leads to better strategy,” Mendes says.

Life Outside of Work

Outside the office, Mendes spends much of his time focused on music.

He continues to play guitar and enjoys attending concerts whenever possible.

“Live music is something I never get tired of,” he says. “You can feel the energy of the crowd and the musicians.”

He is also a long-time sports fan who follows Manchester United, the New York Giants, and the New York Knicks.

For Mendes, these interests provide balance outside of work.

“Sports and music remind you to stay present,” he says.

A Career Shaped by Curiosity

Looking back, Mendes believes curiosity played the biggest role in shaping his career.

He built his path by constantly asking questions and learning from each new challenge.

“I’ve always tried to understand how things work,” Mendes says. “Once you understand the system, you can help improve it.”

From computer science student to finance leader, that mindset continues to guide his work today.

And in a world where data drives decisions, Mendes believes one principle remains constant.

“The numbers matter,” he says. “But the story behind the numbers matters even more.”
