Why is Rocket League Going Free to Play

Rocket League were set to free to play last year, according to Psyonix, who revealed it in the summer of 2020. Rocket League’s transition to a free-to-play platform has been long overdue. Psyonix’s cars-meets-soccer game, Rocket League, is scheduled to go free to play for all on September 23, 2020, at 8 a.m. PT/11 a.m. ET, for those who are unaware. Psyonix’s decision to make one of the world’s most famous games free to play is a brave and brilliant move. I can only assume that Psyonix’s decision is based on the fact that if you don’t own Rocket League now, you probably wouldn’t want to spend $20 on it five years later. Now that the game is available for free, it can generate even more interest than before. Free-to-play, on the other hand, will be followed by a totally new look and feel. Even though with more platforms, you can only trade Rocket League items with players on the same platform.

The game would have been Free-to-Play regardless of whether Epic Games purchased Psyonix or not. It’s only natural that a highly competitive game should be available to anyone on every modern console. Microtransactions, which were already in effect when the game was Pay-to-Play, are merely cosmetic. They have no impact on your gameplay. Vehicles travel at the same pace, turn, and accelerate at the same rate. They simply have different hitboxes, but all of the vehicles have the same five standard hitboxes.

The F2P (free to play) business model is set to be introduced by Rocket League. It means that the game will soon be reduced in price from $20 to $0. Additionally, the game will be permanently moved from the Steam PC store to the Epic Games store. Since the game is going free-to-play, Season 1 of the Rocket Pass will be published with purchase choices for players to give them more objectives to achieve. For Psyonix, this would be the primary source of income.

With so many new players entering the game, you can bet that Rocket Pass sales will grow as well. That is why Psyonix’s decision to make Rocket League free is not a bad one. Finally, a new competitive rating system will be implemented. The highest rank in the game is no longer Grand Champion.

Epic Games is the one who wanted to make “Rocket League” free to play. The developers hope to promote the game as a successful one by using this business model. Microtransactions are still present in the video game, but in the form of special tournaments and a revised challenge system. In inclusion, the addition of cross-play in “Rocket League” has made the franchise more available to a wider audience. There isn’t a single top Esports game that isn’t free-to-play. Even classic Esports games like StarCraft II and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive have gone free-to-play. It’s a challenging business model to thrive in, particularly if you’re a smaller company with a minimal marketing budget, but if a developer has the funds to promote an Esports scene on their games, they must make it Free-to-Play with DLCs limited to cosmetics. Psyonix made lots of changes in the game, including replacing crates and keys with Rocket League Blueprints and Rocket League Credits and much more.
