Contemporary or Traditional? How To Choose the Perfect Wedding Theme

How To Choose the Perfect Wedding Theme

It is one of the first things to consider with your partner when you are planning your wedding. Do you want a more traditional wedding with a white dress, white flowers, and potentially, a ceremony in a religious setting? Or do you want something more modern with lower-cut corsets for the dress or a chocolate fountain in lieu of a cake?

One thing to consider is that traditional ceremonies tend to be, well, conventional and based around things like the first dance, as well as the bride being given away by her father. Contemporary is all about expression. So, how do you choose between the two?

Cultural Significance

First, it is wise to look at your culture. Historically, many cultures have different takes on weddings, and if you are from a family with strong cultural beliefs that you and your partner also feel are important, then it’s probably best to consider a traditional wedding theme.

With traditional weddings, there is usually an aim of reflecting your deep connection to your partner, as well as showcasing a lot of symbolism, which has a timeless quality. So, think about how your choice of wedding will impact your family too, while remembering that it is still your wedding!

Creativity

This is an interesting area to explore. If you or your partner are particularly creative, it may be worth looking into having a more modern wedding, such as a wedding reception in a contemporary event space, or using those skills to bring personal touches in a traditional setting. One example could be that you or your partner personalize each centerpiece on the guest tables at the reception. Or, it could be that you create banners for the reception hall that resonate with your relationship while also tilting towards being more modern than typical.

Costs

OK, as odd as it may seem, there is an argument that either opting for a fully traditional wedding or a completely modern one will be expensive. If you are aiming to look for something more modern, like romantic beach wedding venues or a destination wedding, you will need to consider whether this is feasible based on your budget. So, try to discuss both options and prices and then see which fits better. You can have a great day with either!

Blending the Two

Many couples opt to blend traditional elements of a wedding with more modern ones, which can be an ideal setting for them and their guests. For instance, you can have a white dress, get married in a registry office, or you can search for the most romantic wedding destinations near your home and then have a buffet at the reception, with your first dance being to a song that has significance to you and your partner, even if it is by Billie Eilish! Blending contemporary with traditional can be the most fun, and it is often the option many modern couples take on their wedding day.
