Gemini 3.6 Flash: From Glowing Faces to Real 3D Cutouts

Gemini 3.6 Flash

Most AI-generated pumpkins are not carved. They are spheres with glowing shapes pasted on the front. That tiny distinction became the clearest sign that Gemini 3.6 Flash had changed its approach in our iterative 3D test.

Disclosure: I work with OrcaRouter and used it to run this evaluation. One OpenAI-compatible key provided consistent access to the models without changing their answers.

We asked models to create and repeatedly rewrite a complete Three.js scene: a dark horseman with a carved pumpkin head. The first version of the brief said what to add. The second named techniques including Shape holes and ExtrudeGeometry, plus a rule to reshape rather than keep accumulating primitives.

Gemini’s final guided file went from zero real holes to three. Its use of Shape rose from three to sixteen and ExtrudeGeometry from three to twenty. That means the face was no longer only visual decoration: the object’s geometry had actual openings. It also cut boxes from fifteen to six and reduced its mesh count from 111 to 88.

The lesson is not “always name a Three.js class.” It is that vague artistic instructions encourage vague construction. When an agent needs a particular kind of outcome, name the operation, give it a checkable constraint, and say what kind of shortcut does not count.

Gemini 3.6 Flash is especially interesting here because it remained fast. It completed all four full-file turns in 246 seconds in our harness. Artificial Analysis separately reports 304 output tokens per second for the model. The workloads differ, but both observations support using Flash for quick build-review-rebuild cycles.

Do not overread the result. We have no human visual score, and real holes do not automatically make an entire scene “better.” They do make the improvement inspectable. For 3D coding agents, inspectable progress is much more useful than a pretty claim.
